James Stephen Zoller is a self-taught artist who has been drawing and painting for
many years. He began selling his paintings in 2003 following a successful first
public exhibition. His work is now included in corporate and private collections
across the country. He was a 2009 Hunting Art Prize finalist and his painting titled
Levitating Pear is the cover of the poetry book Levitate by Judian James.
Growing up in San Antonio, Texas and traveling throughout Mexico has heavily
influenced his style of painting. He says, “I have always been attracted to and
inspired by the vibrant colors typically used in Mexican arts and crafts.” This varied
palette of radiant primary colors combined with the use of rich muted tones is
evident in his impressionistic paintings. His work has been described as “realism
with stylization”. More recently a whole new range of color and light has been
introduced into his paintings as a result of time living on the coast of Maine.
In addition to painting, Zoller is also the author of Beyond the Bridge, a novel
inspired by his time living in San Francisco and traveling in Peru.
He and his partner currently live in Houston, Texas and also spend time at their
home in Maine.
